SCADA System in a Large Hospital

The Sheba Medical Center at Tel HaShomer is a university-affiliated tertiary referral hospital that serves as Israel’s national medical center in many fields. Adjacent to Tel Aviv, it is the most comprehensive medical center in the Middle East, renowned for its compassionate care and leading-edge medicine. It is also a major medical-scientific research powerhouse that collaborates internationally with the bio-tech and pharmaceutical industries to develop new drugs, treatments and technologies, and foremost a global center for medical education.

Patients suffering from kidney malfunction put their confidence and have high expectations on dialysis machines. These machines perform the critical processes of cleaning their bodies and ensuring their good chance of recovery. These machines must work flawlessly to provide this life saving treatment.

The dialysis machines work continuously throughout the day at the Tel HaShomer Hospital, offering a better life for patients arriving from around the country.

Pure water is essential to the health of dialysis patients, so a totally monitored, automatic, reliable water treatment system is a must.
The PULSE™ SCADA software of AFCON Control and Automation was entrusted with the task of keeping all systems working properly.

Upgrading the system from P-CIM to PULSE™

The Tel HaShomer Hospital recently upgraded the system to PULSETM SCADA/HMI, to benefit from a modern SCADA/HMI system.

Mr. Yakov Samuel, Department Head, commended the enhanced capabilities and superiority of the PULSE™ SCADA/HMI that is able to provide solutions to Tel HaShomer’s most critical systems.

“The system serves a large number of users from different departments ranging from the control room to branch managers from branches such as the electrical and dialysis branches. Every user has an individual responsibility. PULSE™ allows users to work effortlessly in the system. Working with PULSE™ saves time significantly in the development of the application.”

“The system is widely distributed in different parts of the hospital but tasks like adding station managers are so simple that there is no need for installation. It can be accomplished simply by surfing the server and saving costly time. In addition, you can define user access and permissions instantly”.

“The PULSE™ graphics are intuitive and fascinating and improve the user interface. There is no doubt that the system is superior”.

The response time for handling system problems is a very significant element in critical systems in the hospital. The system failure indication on the screen alerts the user about the failure in real time. More than that, it shows whether the failure is a communication or system failure by different indications on the screen.

Water treatment unit

PULSE™ monitors some of the most critical systems at the hospital such as the dialysis machines water system.

The dialysis system at Tel HaShomer supplies water from the general water system through sets of filters, into a water system that feeds the dialysis machines. Water passes through a process of chlorine level adjustment and then continues to pass through charcoal filters. Thereafter, the water is passed into the RO (Reverse Osmosis) unit.

The RO unit consists of a set of membranes that filters the water passing through. The unit checks that only water is allowed through and it is also self-cleaning. In this unit, different data is checked and measured and water is emptied.

All the above is performed in order to make sure that the water that is supplied to the dialysis machines are clean. The water released from the RO unit continues to an accumulation tank through UV filters and from there, using pumps, the water is supplied to the dialysis machines, whilst continuous necessary measurements are being monitored.

PULSE™ controls the dialysis’ water supply throughout the dialysis systems.

PULSE™ performs functionalities such as:

  • Simulation of the electrical panel
  • Presentation of chlorine concentration
  • Manual switching of PLCs
  • Notification of alarms on system failures
  • Manual reset of the dialysis system
  • Calculation of system parameters
  • Opening and closing the valves

persistent anomalies an alarm is created that can be related with a local signal or broadcast via SMS to a maintenance technician’s cellular phone. The operator receives immediate indication on the screen when the alarm occurs.

Control systems

The Control system is based on Telemecanique® Twido™ PLC connected to the RO Unit and controls the unit’s valves. The communication with PULSE™ is through Modbus TCP/IP.
PULSE™ system is built in a true Client/Server architecture allowing the maintenance personnel and the operators to control and monitor the system from different locations.

Historical data and reporting

PULSE™ displays historical trends of the dialysis system and parameters of the RO unit such as water pressures, conductivity and more.

Reports are automatically generated once a day in PULSE™ Supreme Report and sent to the managers as email attachments.

In the next few years, the system will be expanded to supervise an additional 11 systems, the Osmosis system is one of them.
